About

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a form of traditional medicine based on over 2,500 years of Chinese medical practice and evolution. TCM includes various modes of therapy: herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage (tui na), exercise (qigong and taichi) and diet.

At Koh Kee Chang TCM Clinic we specialise in herbal formulae that help balance the body, strengthen immunity and restore health. Our formulae have been passed down over 13 generations and have been refined to address the imbalances of modern lifestyles.

Dr Koh Kee Chang’s father Dr. Koh Chong Hern (1899-1970) hailed from Chao’an in Guangdong Province of China. He arrived in Singapore in 1918 at the invitation of Seah Liang Seah (a prominent leader of the Teochew community) to treat his son who was ill.

The elder Dr Koh was a well respected physician and served as a President of the Chinese Physician Association and served as the Vice-President of the Chinese School of Traditional Medicine. He played a key role in the development of TCM practice in Singapore.

Pioneering Physicians

The process of preparing TCM herbs for consumption can be time-consuming and laborious. The traditional method of consuming herbs involved procuring a prescription from the TCM physician, taking the prescription to the TCM medical hall (the TCM version of a pharmacy where herbs are sold) to purchase the herbs to be brewed at home. The process of brewing herbs follows strict cooking instructions involving the preparation, procedure and timing of the broth according to the specific herbs used.

In 1971 Dr Koh Kee Chang processed the family herbal formulae into powder form and pioneered the use of powdered TCM herbs in capsules to provide an even more convenient and palatable method of taking herbal remedies. This method has proven to be an effective form of treatment and the convenience of capsules has been successfully adopted and appreciated by patients.
